Fire breaks out as police investigate fatal shooting

OAKLEY, OH (FOX19) -

A fire broke out on Sunday as police investigated a fatal shooting in Oakley.

Cincinnati Police were called to investigate a fatal shooting that occurred on Alamo Avenue in Oakley early Sunday morning around 1:04 a.m.

Authorities arrived at the scene near an apartment complex where they discovered Dante L. Cross, 24, suffering from gunshot wounds. Cross was transported by the Cincinnati Fire Department to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center where he later died.

Cincinnati Police Detective Gormly tells FOX19 that Cross did not live in the apartment complex, but his ex-girlfriend does. At this time investigators believe that the shooting may have began as a domestic dispute.

Police say that a suspect was detained and questioned but was later released. Detective Gormly says that the incident looks like a case of self defense. No charges have been filed, but the case has been turned over to the Hamilton County Prosecutor's office.

While police were investigating the homicide, a fire broke out in the basement of the apartment building. Police say Machall Castro, set fire to a Christmas tree in his apartment. He's charged with two counts of aggravated arson.

Castro injured his hands in the fire and was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He has since been released from the hospital and was taken to the Hamilton County Justice Center.

Police do not believe that the fire and the shooting are related.
