Public Library receives $111,000 from Duke Energy for reducing energy consumption

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - On December 11, Duke Energy presented the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County with a check for $111,000 as a rebate for reducing energy consumption at the Main Library.

These savings resulted from the Library’s participation in Duke Energy’s SmartBuilding Advantage ® program. This program used building energy usage interval data and on-site assessments to identify and analyze energy efficiency opportunities at the Main Library. Following program recommendations, the Library replaced T12 lights with T8 lights and implemented improvements to its boiler plant in order to generate the highest energy savings in the shortest amount of time for the lowest cost.

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Keep Cincinnati Beutiful and Whole Foods invited residents to take part in an electronic waste recycle event over the weekend.

The “One Stop Drop”, was held Saturday in honor of America Recycles Day. Residents were encouraged to participate by bringing hard-to-recycle items like electronic waste to one convenient drop off location for free recycling. 2TRG, an e-StewardsÒ certified electronics recycler, provided free recycling for a wide variety of electronic waste including computer monitors, audio equipment, printers, and more. They collected over 17,000 pounds of e-waste and dozens of TVs.

The e-waste will be diverted from the landfill and recycled locally at 2TRG’s Blue Ash facility.

NORWOOD, OH (FOX19) - A free recycling drop off is being set up at Rookwood Commons in Norwood on Saturday, November 17 from 10am - 3pm.

People will be able to drop off computers, plastic bags, used pens and markers, light bulbs, batteries and cell phones to the Whole Foods Market.

President Barack Obama has declared November 15, 2012 as America Recycles Day.

MADISONVILLE, OH (FOX19) - Fifth Third bank announced on Thursday that they have been recognized as Recycling at Work Program of the Year by the Hamilton County Recycling and Solid Waste District. 

The Recycling at Work Program of the Year award recognizes an organization that has implemented a successful, comprehensive recycling program that makes recycling and waste reduction options available to all employees.

Fifth Third’s Madisonville campus recycling program was implemented one year ago in November 2011 on the occasion of America Recycles Day. The program operates at the George A. Schaefer, Jr. Madisonville Operations Center and the Madisonville Operations Building, both located in Cincinnati on Interstate 71.  More than 5,000 Fifth Third Bank employees work at the two facilities.

SYMMES TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) - Symmes Township Elementary students are tracking a turtle that was released to the Nature Trail.

The Bruner family, including Mom and Dad Stephanie and Joe and son third-grader Pierce, his brother Grant, a sixth-grader at Edwin H. Greene Intermediate, and sister Alexandra, a first-grader at Symmes, rescued a turtle on the side of the highway a few years ago.

When the turtle was rescued, the family marked him with red nail polish for tracking purposes and released him on the Symmes Nature Trail, behind Symmes Elementary.

Blue Ash park maintenance department to host plant swap

BLUE ASH, OH (FOX19) - Whether you’re already a green thumb or looking for a plant or two to help get you started, the Blue Ash Park maintenance department is hosting an event on Saturday get the ball rolling.

The City of Blue Ash will host a fall plant swap from 9 to 11 a.m. on Sept. 29 in the parking lot of the Blue Ash Recreation Center (adjacent to the tennis courts). The event encourages attendees to bring a plant from their own garden and exchange it for another brought by a fellow resident.

The Blue Ash Park Maintenance Department will also have several perennials available for attendees to take home, including Black Eye Susan’s, Liriope, Daylilies, Coreopsis, Iris and Sedum along with a collection of ornamental grasses.

Great Outdoor Weekend Events at the Observatory

MOUNT LOOKOUT, OH (FOX19) - The Cincinnati Observatory will show you the stars during Great Outdoor Weekend happening September 22&23. 

Gaze through the beautiful 1843 Mitchel Telescope and see the Moon that Saturday and Sunday night. Both programs include tours of the historic buildings and informal presentations.  Amateur astronomers will be on hand with their personal telescopes to help you explore the universe.  Bring your own telescope for expert help setting it up and finding celestial treasures or simply bring your eyes and imagination.

On Sunday September 23 from 1-4pm,The Observatory will also be open for daytime history tours and safe solar viewing through the old telescope.  No reservations required for any of these programs.

Free and open to the public.
