Volunteers needed for June's Ohio River Sweep

Volunteers needed for June's Ohio River Sweep

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - Volunteers are needed for River Sweep 2012 scheduled for Saturday, June 16, along the shoreline of the Ohio River and its many tributaries.

River Sweep is a riverbank cleanup that extends the entire length of the Ohio River and beyond.  More than 3,000 miles of shoreline will be combed for trash and debris.  This is the largest environmental event of its kind and encompasses six states.

“The Ohio River Sweep is very important because for a few hours on one day volunteers can help make a difference in the appearance of this great natural resource,” said Jeanne Ison, Project Director.  “The Sweep has grown so much in the past few years, we’ve been able to expand the project to tributaries and feeder streams of the Ohio River.”

Open house to discuss Bloody Run watershed; problems may be worse than its name

Open house to discuss Bloody Run watershed; problems may be worse than its name

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - MSD is hosting an open house to discuss potential sewer improvement projects in the Bloody Run Watershed.  The open house is from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Thursday, February 9, at Woodward Career Technical High School, 7005 Reading Road in Bond Hill.

It is open to the community.

The Bloody Run watershed includes portions of Amberley Village, Columbia Township, Golf Manor, Norwood and three Cincinnati neighborhoods (Bond Hill, Pleasant Ridge and Roselawn).

Each year, about 600 million gallons of sewage – mixed with stormwater – overflows from the Bloody Run combined sewer through Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) 181 into Bloody Run, a tributary of Mill Creek.  The combined sewer overflows because its capacity is exceeded during heavy rains, mainly due to large volumes of stormwater entering the system.

Neighborhood blitzes coming to Kennedy Heights and Pendleton

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - Cincinnati neighborhoods Kennedy Heights and Pendleton will see a 90-day blitz of City services this year as part of the city's Neighborhood Enhancement Program. The NEP is a partnership between the City and the community to address blight, crime and other nuisances, and its goal is to serve as a kick-start to long-term neighborhood revitalization and reinvestment.

In past neighborhood blitz programs, people from multiple city agencies have walked the streets looking for zoning and fire code violations, cleaning up trash and litter and taking steps to improve the appearance of the areas.

Kennedy Heights and Pendleton will be the 13th and 14th neighborhoods to take part in the NEP.  U.S. Bank, PNC Bank and Huntington Bank all donated seed money totaling $19,000 to facilitate improvements in both neighborhoods.

OEPA to regulate liquid runoff from construction material landfills

OEPA to regulate liquid runoff from construction material landfills

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Landfills that are specialized in receiving construction and demolition debris have not generally been regulated for liquid runoff, on the theory that this is now a problem compared to other types of landfills, but the Ohio EPA has found dangerous runoff (or "leachate") in some cases, and now plans to monitor liquid runoff from construction and demolition debris landfills.

Here's a release from the agency.  Below that is a list of landfills in Hamilton County that OEPA says accept or recently accepted this kind of waste.  The state doesn't list any such landfills in the other seven counties of Southwest Ohio.

The Ohio EPA is updating rules to regulate existing licensed construction and demolition debris landfills and will hold a public hearing on the proposed rules on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012.

The public hearing will begin at 10:30 a.m.
