Local group working on Japan disaster aid

Local group working on Japan disaster aid

BLUE ASH, OH (FOX19) - Matthew 25: Ministries, which may be best known to people around Cincinnati for aid to third world countries like Haiti (after an earthquake) and Nicaragua (after a hurricane), is now working to bring help to northern Japan.

The biggest obstacle is access to the danger zone.  Thursday the organization said they have local partners in place and requests for aid, but they don't know where to set up bases to operate from in Japan due to conflicting reports about the leaking nuclear reactors, and how large the safety zone should be around them.

They are also looking for donations, and especially the following items:
1. Financial donations
2. Nonperishable food
3. Personal care products (Especially Diapers)
4. Cleaning products (No Bleach)
5. First Aid Supplies

Historical accidents make Tri-State a nuclear-free zone

Historical accidents make Tri-State a nuclear-free zone

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - While Japan worries about the state of nuclear reactors in the zone that was struck by last week's earthquake, Cincinnati has two reasons not to worry about such a situation in the near future.

The obvious reason is the lack of recorded earthquake activity in this region.  Another is that there are no nuclear power plants anywhere near the Tri-State area.

If you drew a line from Fountain Square to the nearest commercial nuclear power plant, that line would end 188 miles away at the Davis-Besse power plant on the shores of Lake Erie east of Toledo.

40 years, ago, planners expected that three nuclear power reactors would be within 60 miles of downtown, but the two projects that were planned to contain those reactors both were cancelled well into contruction.

The better known of these was the William Zimmer plant in Moscow, on the Ohio River in Clermont County.  The plant was under construction for a dozen years, until construc

Drop your drugs in Deer Park

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - A group that represents both ecological and law enforcement interests is asking you to turn in your old, unused medical prescriptions.

Southwest Ohio DROP - "Dispose Responsibly of Pharmaceuticals" is encouraging people to bring their old medicine to locations in Deer Park and other nearby locations, as well as a lot of other locations in Hamilton, Warren, and Clermont Counties, during the middle of the day Saturday.

It's long been a concern that drugs left around the house might be attractive to young children, teens, or even to drug addicts.

Madeira Seeks Savings with Solar Panels

MADEIRA, OH (FOX19) - With a continued commitment to find ways to hold down operating costs, the Madeira City Schools Board of Education voted to sign a letter of intent to finalize a solar power purchase agreement with Creekwood Energy. The power purchase agreement calls for Creekwood Energy with its partners Dovetail Solar and Wind and MP2 Capital to install solar panels on the roof tops of Madeira Elementary, Madeira Middle, and Madeira High School beginning in June 2011. The system at all three buildings will total 310 kW and will be fully installed and operational before the start of next school year.

“This is an innovative way that the district can save money while having no upfront costs,” said Superintendent Steve Kramer.

Guess who stopped in for dinner?

LOVELAND (FOX19) - If mice are on the menu, you may find a red-tailed hawk on the guest list.

Mike Fugate of Loveland saw this hawk in his back yard Monday morning.  The birds are fairly common in Ohio, and are seen all over the Tri-State.  They can be found flying around downtown and industrial areas at times.

Studies of red-tails show outdoor species of mice as a huge percentage of their diet.  They also eat other small mammals, small birds, lizards, snakes, and sometimes poultry.

They are one of the largest hawk species in this area.  Each wing is longer than the body, giving the bird a large wingspan for soaring.  If you were able to look at the opposite side of the bird, you would see the solid red tail that gives it its name.
