Readers invited to connect with authors, publishers during April 21 Ohioana event

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County is hosting the “Ohioana 2013: Connecting Readers and Hamilton County Writers” at the Main Library Sunday, April 21, at 1:45 p.m. This literary event not only honors authors from Hamilton County, it gives readers a chance to interact with them, sit in on an author panel discussion, and learn more about the publishing world.

During Ohioana, the Cooper Award will be presented to Writer’s Digest / F&W Media. Created in 2003 and named for the founding family of Ohioana, the Cooper Award is given to an individual or organization that has made outstanding contributions to the promotion of books and reading in Hamilton County. Past winners include Andrea Cheng, Buck Niehoff, Sharon Draper, Will Hillenbrand, and The Friends of the Public Library.

Fundraiser to benefit head & neck cancer research

MARIEMONT, OH (FOX19) - The National Exemplar will host a special fundraising dinner to benefit a very worthy cause -- The Brandon C. Gromada Head & Neck Cancer Foundation.

Brandon was a long-time friend and colleague at The National Exemplar and its staff.

The National Exemplar will host the event from 5-9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9 in the main dining room at 6880 Wooster Pike in Mariemont. All profits from the evening from both dine-in and carry out orders will go to the Foundation.

‘Your Business: It Starts With a Plan’ workshops offered at Main Library

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Are you a new or prospective business owner? Would you like assistance and advice on starting and running your business, including how to write a business plan? If so, then plan to attend “Your Business: It Starts With a Plan,” a free three-part series of instructional workshops conducted by specialists from SCORE, Counselors to America’s Small Business.

9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Due to a family obligation, Triple Crown publisher and author Vickie Stringer had to cancel her April 28 appearance at the Main Library.

At this time there are no plans to reschedule the event.

The Public Library is sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused, but invites the public to come to other upcoming author events, including Ohioana on April 21, Comic Con on May 5, author Patricia Schultz on May 11, and author Khaled Hosseini on May 31.

Hear Poetry in the Garden winners, local published poets at Main Library

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Celebrate National Poetry Month during the Main Library’s 15th annual Poetry in the Garden series held in partnership with the Grailville Retreat & Program Center.

Budding poets whose verses won the second annual Poetry in the Garden Contest and their judges will start off the series by reading their poems Tuesday, April 2. During the next four Tuesday evenings (April 9, 16, 23 & 30) come hear some of the most respected poets in the region share their poetry. All readings, except for April 2, are followed by an open mic session, where participants can read two poems (for up to five minutes each).

Teens invited to commit a ‘Random Act of Poetry’ during April at the Public Library

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Hey teens, maybe you’re a poet and you just don’t know it. There’s one way to find out!

During April, which is National Poetry Month, the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County is teaming up with Elementz Urban Arts Center to present four workshops to help youth craft some original poems for the Teen Poetry Contest. Workshops are:

REI hosting first Outdoor Expo on Saturday

NORWOOD, OH (FOX19) - Outdoor retail store REI is hosting their first Outdoor Expo on Saturday, March 23 from noon - 4pm.

This event is an opportunity to learn how to get started in outdoor events in the Cincinnati area and meet other outdoor groups.

Activities represented include mountain and road biking, climbing, paddling, hiking, camping, gardening, environmental education, and environmental stewardship.

There will be hands-on activities for kids and adults, including an in-store scavenger hunt, touchable items and artifacts, spin & win "Wheel of Wonder," knot tying, also guest will get to, try out a 23' climbing wall.

 Hamilton County Park District will guide you on one of three routes: Raven's Roost, Eagle's Nest and Hawk Hangout District.

This event will take place at Cincinnati's REI at Rookwood Commons, 2643 Edmondson Rd.
