Blue Manatee Children’s Bookstore announces ‘Show Your Love for Books’ Contest

OAKLEY, OH (FOX19) - The Blue Manatee children's bookstore in Oakley is ready to unveil its “Show Your Love for Books” contest. The contest, kicking off on Friday, February 1, is intended to marry a child’s love of their favorite story with their artistic and creative talent. 

Children ages 12 and under are invited to artistically “dress up” a picture of the bookstore’s mascot, the manatee, as their favorite picture book or chapter book character.  Two winners will be chosen, one from the picture book category and one from the chapter book category. Children can “dress up” the manatee using any media except photocopies from the book they are paying tribute to.

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - The Library will host an open house for parents about applying for federal student financial aid Sunday, Feb. 10, from 1 p.m.– 4 p.m. in TeenSpot at the Main Library, 800 Vine Street.

Volunteers with expertise in navigating the Free Application for Federal Student Aid process will discuss timelines, filing options, forms, and other key information needed that will help college-bound teens and young adults complete the application process. One-on-one consultations will also be available for those already engaged in the process, but who need assistance with specific questions.

Participants need to bring: Student’s IRS 1040 tax return and W2 form, parents’ IRS 1040 tax return and W2 forms, student’s social security card and driver’s license, additional benefit and income information, and FAFSA pin number.

Sycamore students to rock with acclaimed jazz violinist

SYCAMORE TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) - Sycamore High School’s electric ensemble, will perform a rock concert with world-renowned jazz violinist Christian Howes on Friday, February 15.

The concert will include works by Foo Fighters, 311, Skillet, Guns N’ Roses and the Beatles.

Directed by David Smarelli, SHS music teacher, SEE 1 was the Cincinnati area’s first high school rock orchestra. Students who are selected for the group play a variety of electric string instruments, guitars, keyboards and drums and are regularly joined by professional musicians for concerts.

SYCAMORE TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) - Edwin H. Greene Intermediate students, staff and parents will host their annual winter carnival from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Feb. 2 at the school, 5200 Aldine Drive.  The theme for this year’s carnival is Rock & Roll Through the Ages.

The event will feature more than 20 carnival games (including the usual favorites such as Plinko, soda ring toss, chip toss, and candy walk), prizes, split-the-pot, a Bid-n-Buy, food and raffles.  Grand raffle items include a one-week stay at a two-bedroom condo in Hilton Head, SC; a Lexmark Pro-5500 Printer; and a Barnes & Noble NOOK HD+.

Madcap Puppets to perform at The Kenwood

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - The award winning Madcap Puppet show will be at The Kenwood by Senior Star on Wednesday, January 16 at 8pm.

They will be performing “The Firebird,” based off of Igor Stravinsky’s 1919 Firebird Suite. The Firebird is performed as a giant shadow puppet ballet accompanied by Stravinsky’s narrative symphonic music. This is the first time Madcap Puppets have performed “The Firebird” for a retirement community. 

Madcap Puppet Theater has been creating unique performances combining actors, giant puppets, live music and original scripts for more than 30 years.

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County is offering children’s programs at selected branches to honor the life of Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Celebrate the life of Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. at the Children’s Learning Center in the Main Library. Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati actor Deondra Kamau Means will perform “Martin’s Dream,” a one-man show that explores the real person behind the historic figure. Afterward, children can make a “stained glass” window craft using inspirational words.

BLUE ASH, OH (FOX19) - The City of Blue Ash Parks and Recreation Department presents their Tuesday Evening Café Series beginning on January 15.

All Café Series are open to the public and offer family-friendly programs for all to enjoy.

On January 15, Bricks4Kidz LEGO™ Demonstration will feature a fun hands-on demonstration. It will begin with a brief lesson, leading to the construction of a model made of specialized LEGO™ components that illustrates the concept taught.

The demonstration is free, but registration is required.

The February 12 Community Café Series will feature Blue Ash Recreation Center Fitness Center Trainers in a free, open forum question and answer session. Personal trainers will demonstrate anything from proper form to the importance of wearing the correct gear.
