KENWOOD, OH (FOX19) - A new yoga complex opens next week on Cincinnati’s eastside. Kenwood Hot Yoga, located at 8110 Montgomery Road in the Kenwood Galleria, opens its doors October 1.
Kenwood Hot Yoga specializes in instruction in the hot yoga form, which is surging in popularity across the U.S. The term refers to yoga exercises performed under hot and humid conditions that seek to simulate the heat and humidity of southern India where many styles of yoga originated. Most yoga experts agree that the heat helps to increase an individual's flexibility in yoga poses.
According to Kenwood Hot Yoga president Stephanie Lang, the studio was born from a deep love of yoga, and a desire to share its positive benefits with others. Lang comes to the position with credentials that include certifications in Moksha, Ashtanga and Sivananda yoga, pre-natal teaching and several dance certifications. In addition, she is also a Registered Holistic Nutritionist and a certified as a Reiki practitioner, a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing.
“We are about a yoga practice that serves everyone,” Lang said. “That means we’re committed to making it accessible and challenging to people at all skill levels. It’s a misconception that people who
can't touch their toes can't do yoga. After all, yoga is for the inflexible.”
Proponents of hot yoga also say the practice sweats away toxins, and that some students have reported burning more than 800 calories in a single class. In addition to those clear health benefits, hot yoga has been credited with increasing spinal health and muscular flexibility by allowing muscles to stretch deeply.
In designing the Kenwood facility, Lang said a tremendous amount of thought was invested in creating a one-of-a-kind yoga environment where participants can leave their stress behind and set about the work of becoming more strong, flexible and focused. “We let that goal guide the natural material selections and design decisions we made,” she said.
The nearly 6,000 sq. ft. facility houses a large (2,000 sq. ft.) cork floor hot studio, a more intimate (500 sq. ft.) studio with slightly lower heat, an expansive women’s locker room with six showers, a men’s locker room with three showers and a front desk area staffed by Kenwood Hot Yoga ambassadors.
As part of grand opening week, all Kenwood Hot Yoga classes will be offered free of charge from October 1-7, with starting times ranging from 6 a.m. through 8 p.m.
