CINCINNATI (FOX19) - The Stockpiling Moms will teach you the basics of strategically using your coupons to save big and dine out on a dime.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Public Library, these free workshops will be offered at select Library locations in April, May, and June.  Registration is recommended, by calling the hosting Library directly, or visiting http://programs.cincinnatilibrary.org/ to register online.

Shelley King and Melissa Jennings have blogged at StockpilingMoms.com and made it their mission to save money for their families and help others do the same.  Their book Savvy Savings: Couponing Secrets from the Stockpiling Moms is available to check out at your Public Library.

Hamilton County’s yard trimmings drop-off sites open Saturday, March 31

COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) - The Hamilton County Recycling and Solid Waste District’s free yard trimmings drop-off sites will open on Saturday, March 31.

This program is for Hamilton County residents only. Residents who drop-off yard trimmings must bring proof of residency, such as a driver’s license or utility bill. Landscapers and commercial establishments are NOT eligible to participate in this program.

Locations:

East:  Bzak Landscaping, 3295 Turpin Lane (off Rt. 32) in Anderson Township
                (Also open Monday – Friday from 7:30 a.m. — 5 p.m. in addition to hours listed below)
West:  Kuliga Park, 6717 Bridgetown Road in Green Township
North:  Rumpke Sanitary Landfill, 3800 Struble Road (and Colerain Avenue) in Colerain Township

You don’t need acres of maples trees and a large savings account to begin “sugaring” in your backyard. Receive detailed guidance at this FREE program. Tree spouts (spiles) will be available for sale. Call 231-8678 by Feb. 9 to register.

PWC awarded grant from CITI Foundation

PWC awarded grant from CITI Foundation

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - Bond Hill-based People Working Cooperatively (PWC), a local nonprofit that provides critical home repair, weatherization, modification and maintenance services to help residents stay safely in their homes, has secured $5,000 from Citi Foundation for its volunteer improvement program. 

Citi Foundation awarded PWC the grant of $5,000 to enable its volunteers to complete small home repairs and other tasks in the 20 counties PWC serves in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. 

The volunteer improvement program relies on PWC’s large network of more than 6,000 volunteers who spend time helping clients with projects not funded by PWC’s traditional funding. The volunteer improvement program handles small tasks such as fixing leaky faucets, installing new doorknobs and replacing broken doorbells. 

“Our organization has been built upon the great work of our reliable volunteers,” said Jock Pitts, president of PWC.

The Northeast Fire Collaborative remind all members of the community that electric space heaters are amongst the number one cold weather killer,” as they are the leading cause of fires during cold weather months. Fire officials also remind residents in rental properties that they have the right to demand that their landlords install smoke detectors in apartments. Landlords are required by law to provide and install smoke detectors but it’s up to the residents to check batteries in the smoke detectors and to replace batteries when needed.

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - The Cincinnati Hamilton County Community County Action Agency Agenciy's new Toll Free Appointment & Information Hotline at 1-866-747-1039.  HEAP’s new Toll Free Appointment & Information Hotline eliminates long lines that clients faced in the past. “We’re committed to helping as many people possible and doing so in a manner that gets people in and out sparing them the inconvenience of waiting for hours,” said Mason Gray, agency spokesperson.

As temperatures drop outside, temperatures are dropping inside as well for many Hamilton County households that have had their utilities shut off.

Volunteer and learn at Grailville next weekend

MIAMI TOWNSHIP, CLERMONT COUNTY (FOX19) - Grailville Retreat and Program Center announces the last in its 2011 Garden Volunteer Days Series on Saturday, October 29th at 9 am-Noon. Learn various aspects of growing vegetables that you can apply in your own backyard while volunteering at Grailville, located on an organic farm.  During this last Volunteer Day, participants will work on soil fertility for the upcoming planting season. You will experience how to apply compost and mulch to soil beds for added nutrients and growing power. There will also be instruction on how to cover crops, weed & mulch garlic, as well as setting up seed extension with expert gardener Mary Lu Lageman. 

Please bring gloves, a water bottle, sunscreen, hat and footwear that can get dirty (and a mid-morning snack if you would like).  Tools will be supplied. No experience needed; you can join us for one day or the whole season.
