UC Blue Ash college student receives free tuition

BLUE ASH, OH (FOX19) - Ryana Wright couldn’t have asked for a better gift for the holidays.  The University of Cincinnati Blue Ash College student was selected as the winner of a raffle held by the college; her prize is free tuition for the spring semester, which began January 7.

Students at UC Blue Ash College who registered for their spring classes by December 3 were eligible for the drawing.  The semester runs from January 7 through April 19.  More than 3,300 students registered in time, but only one was fortunate enough to have her name drawn.

“I am so happy and thankful I was chosen for this opportunity,” said Ryana, a graduate of North College Hill High School who is working toward a degree in Dental Hygiene.  “I want to thank Dean Short-Thompson and everyone at the college for this incredible gift.”

The free tuition covers all instructional costs for the semester and is valued at just under $2,000.

SYCAMORE TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) - A Sycamore Junior high school teacher was recently named Outstanding in Math by the 2012 Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in integrated math education and another in mathematics and statistics from Miami University, Abbas earned her master’s degree from Miami in math education.  Since 2008, she’s been teaching seventh- and eighth-grade math at Sycamore Junior High School.

“Kelly is, in one word, dynamic,” said Karen Naber, Sycamore’s director of academic affairs.  “She is truly a teacher who builds relationships with kids the moment they walk into the classroom.  Those relationships give Kelly the ability to help kids determine what they need to know and how far they can go. She really pushes her students to reach their potential.”

SJHS Principal Brian Wallace agreed; “If you’re in her classroom, her kids are engaged. She brings out the best in math learners.”

Main Library to host 58th annual Veterans Day Commemoration Nov. 12

CINCINNATI OH (FOX19) - When James R. Shaw enlisted in the U.S. Air Force at the age of 21 in 1955, he followed a path blazed by the famed aviation pioneers—the Tuskegee Airmen—who were the first African American pilots of the U.S. Army Air Force. They overcame segregation and prejudice to become one of the most highly respected fighter groups of World War II, proving conclusively that African Americans could fly and maintain sophisticated combat aircraft.

The Tuskegee Airmen’s achievements, together with the men and women who supported them, paved the way for full integration of the U.S. military in 1948. Mr. Shaw, Chief Master Sergeant of the U.S. Air Force (Ret.) and the President of the Greater Cincinnati Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen, Inc., will give the keynote remarks for the 58th Annual Veterans Day Commemoration to be held on Monday, November 12 at 10:45 a.m. in the Atrium of the Main Library, 800 Vine Street (south building, first floor).

MARIEMONT, OH (FOX19) - A Mariemont school employee can now add publisher and editor to her list of accomplishments. Kathy Ryan is part of a team of people that are creating a series of children’s books about wooden boats, with “Larry the Lyman Becomes a Star” as the premiere book in the series.

Larry the Lyman Becomes a Star is about a Lyman pleasure boat that wishes he was faster like some other boats he sees on the water, but, when an emergency arises he discovers that he has talent and is special too.

A Lyman is a wooden boat that is most famous for the use of the lapstrake planking design on the sides of the boat, where the planks lap one edge over the other. They are also primarily known for their mahogany decks and painted hull sides.
