SYCAMORE TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) - At the Sycamore Board of Education meeting on Feb. 15, the Board approved the recommendation of Superintendent Adrienne C. James, Ed.D., to name Leslie Combs as the new Blue Ash Elementary principal, effective July 1, 2012.

BLUE ASH, OH (FOX19) - Blue Ash resident Beverly Tinsley has launched a board game web site that will soon be a necessity for every household with children: www.busstopboardgames.com.

Bus Stop Board Game is the perfect game for teachers, parents, day care providers and children aimed at promoting safety, cooperation and responsibility. This game helps save lives by reinforcing transportation safety and bullying prevention.

There are more than 440,000 school buses on the road transporting more than 24 million children. Statistics show that about 26 children die or are injured every year in school bus-related accidents. Bus Stop Board Game teaches safety and reinforces crucial safety rules.

Tinsley endured years of an undiagnosed learning disability, dyslexia. She is passionate about this game, which promotes self-esteem, education and safety through positive reinforcement.

Benefit Saturday for jazz guitarist Wilbert Longmire

 

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - A benefit concert will be held Saturday night at the Redmoor in Mt. Lookout for a one of Cincinnati's best-known jazz musicians, Wilbert Longmire.

Longmire has played for decades, gaining national attention for albums he released in the late 70's on the label of Jazz impresario Bob James, playing and singing in a style similar to that of his friend George Benson, who recommended him to James.  He also played with top jazz musicians across the country.  In recent years he continued to perform frequently in clubs around the region.  Now he is suffering from health and financial problems, and is too ill to play.

On Saturday evening at 7 p.m. there will be an All Star Jazz Jam session featuring the best jazz musicians in the region. The suggested donation is $20.

Beech Acres To Host Parenting Workshop On Conflict Resolution

ANDERSON TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) - Beech Acres Parenting Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting parents and caregivers in raising children who thrive, will be hosting a ‘For the Love of Kids’ monthly parenting workshop on February 21 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at its Anderson campus (6881 Beechmont Ave; 45230).

The workshop topic is Conflict Resolution: effective techniques for reducing conflict and stress in the home. It is a must for parents who have ever found themselves feeling like they’re not speaking the same language as their children or who have ever started a discussion only to have it end in an argument. Presenters Dan and Diana Rimstidt will teach participants strategies for improving communication and resolving conflict favorably.

Hyde Park native named 2012 Athenaeum of Ohio Distinguished Alumnus

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon, recently appointed bishop of the Diocese of Joliet, Ill., and former bishop of the Diocese of Steubenville, Ohio, has been named the 2012 Athenaeum of Ohio Distinguished Alumnus. He will receive the award during a visit to the Athenaeum in March.

Bishop Conlon, a Cincinnati native, received his master’s of divinity degree from the Athenaeum’s Mount St. Mary’s Seminary of the West in 1975. He was selected as the 2012 distinguished alumnus by the Rev. Benedict O’Cinnsealaigh, Athenaeum president/rector, from a slate of four nominees presented him by The Athenaeum of Ohio Alumni Association.

Musician and event producer Johnny Schott dies

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - Johnny Schott, a musician and concert/event producer whose Cincinnati career dated from before a stint with Cincinnati band the Heywoods, died Wednesday at his home in Tennessee. 

Musician and friend Leroy Ellington says Schott woke up Wednesday morning, said good morning to his wife, and collapsed to the floor a few minutes later.

Schott was highly visible on the Cincinnati music scene in the late 60's and early 70's, including a some time with the Heywoods before they had their biggest hit; he was the co-writer of one of their songs called "The Watcher".  Brian O'Donnell of WVXU interviewed Schott about his early career and the interview in two parts can be heard here and here (2nd guest) on
