SYCAMORE TOWNSHIP (FOX19)- This Thursday, May 3rd at 7:30 p.m. the Sycamore girls varsity lacrosse team will play St. Ursula in a charity lacrosse game to support the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

The game is at the Sycamore Jr. High stadium. Sycamore says they will “pack the stands in purple”.

A cancer survivor will speak about the disease and the organization. There will also be a raffle and food sales, with proceeds going to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

Kids learn about the environment in Earth Hour activities

ANDERSON TOWNSHIP, HAMILTON COUNTY, OH (FOX19) - Kids from the Goddard School in Anderson Township learned about the earth and the environment in a series of activities preceding Saturday evening's Earth Hour.
On Friday more than 100 students were there to turn off the lights (except for emergency lighting) for an hour from 10-11 a.m., part of the national Earth Hour activities.  Throughout the week, kids participate din other learning activities.  They made musical instruments of recyclable materials, and they were visited by Allison Tait, a Cincinnati Parks naturalist from California Woods, who talked about ways to care for the environment and the animals.

READING (FOX19) – Seven Seniors from Mount Notre Dame high School in reading demonstrated projects they created to serve the community at Monday night’s (MND) Senior Capstone Showcase Evening.  The evening is the culminating component of the four-year journey that each MND senior has taken through her MAP (My Action Plan) Program.  The MAP Program is designed to engage the MND student in experiences that will empower her in all areas of her life.

Through MAP, MND students:

  • transition into the MND community (freshman year)
  • learn to LIVE as an empowered young woman (sophomore year)
  • learn to LEAD as an empowered young woman (junior year)
  • learn to SERVE as an empowered young woman (senior year)

MARIEMONT, OH (FOX19) - Jessica Baldwin, the lead after-school teacher at Mariemont Elementary School, recently earned the 2012 Excellence in Education award from Champions a leading provider of before- and after-school extended day learning programs.

Baldwin's award recognizes his/her dedication to the Cincinnati community through her work at the Mariemont Champions program, and her commitment to helping educate students in her care.

INDIAN HILL, OH (FOX19) - The Ohio Center for Law Related Education (OCLRE) hosted the 2012 Ohio Mock Trial State Finals on March 8-10.  Indian Hill High School in suburban Cincinnati won the state championship round. Archbishop Hoban High School out of Akron placed second in the event. Supreme Court of Ohio Justice Robert R. Cupp served as the presiding judge during the final round.

Established in 1983 by the OCLRE as a statewide educational program, the mock trial competition is a simulated trial in a real courtroom where high school students learn firsthand about law, court procedures and the judicial system by competing against other teams.

Three-hundred and fifty teams from 178 schools across Ohio participated at the district competition at the beginning of the year. From there, 114 teams advanced to the regional competition, and only 31 teams competed at the state level.

Mount Lookout student's culinary team wins Ohio title, heads to regional event

CLIFTON, OH (FOX19) - Fresh from a winning performance in the recent Ohio Cookoff competition, a student team from the Midwest Culinary Institute will head to Niagara Falls next month to compete at the 2012 American Culinary Federation’s Northeast Regional Conference.

During the Ohio Cookoff event held last month, the Cincinnati State team garnered a gold medal in the skills competition and a silver medal in the cooking competition, winning an overall national silver medal and the right to represent the state of Ohio at the ACF Regional Conference. There they will compete for the right to represent the Northeast Region for the national title at the ACF national convention, which will be held this July in Orlando.

The team is led by Master Chef John Kinsella and coached by MCI instructors George Zappas, Michael VanFleet, and Laura Horn.

Sycamore accepts nominations for Celebrate Excellence Educator Award

SYCAMORE TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) - Sycamore Community Schools is now accepting nominations for the Hamilton County Educational Service Center Celebrate Excellence Educator Award, an award developed to recognize and honor excellent educators within the public schools of Hamilton County. 

Teachers, students, parents and community members are invited to nominate a Sycamore educator for this prestigious award which recognizes educators who hold a certified license including teachers, nurses, psychologists, counselors, speech therapists and administrators.  Nomination forms, which will be accepted through March 23, are attached to this email and are available at Sycamore Central Office (4881 Cooper Road) and the district website, www.sycamoreschools.org.
