Involvement with baby animals generally a bad idea

Involvement with baby animals generally a bad idea

COLUMBUS (FOX19) - Ohio wildlife officials are trying to convince people to keep their hands off most baby animals, even if appears they need a home.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife staff, Ohio Wildlife Rehabilitators Association (OWRA) members, and licensed wildlife rehabilitators have worked hard to reduce the number of wild animals being picked up by well-meaning people.  Despite their cute and sometimes helpless appearance, wild animals are capable of biting, scratching, and transmitting diseases to humans and domestic animals.

"The Division of Wildlife and wildlife rehabilitators share a common goal to be good stewards and ensure healthy wildlife populations will exist for future generations to enjoy," stated Carolyn Caldwell, program administrator in the Division of Wildlife.

Many people believe that they are doing the right thing by rescuing a young wild animal and think that hand raising is a good alternative to

Police investigate deliberate killing of goose in parking lot

Police investigate deliberate killing of goose in parking lot

BLUE ASH, OH (FOX19) - Blue Ash Police and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources are investigating what appears to be the deliberate killing of a Canada goose outside a bowling alley on Hunt Road.

The police report says the suspect "did intentionally run over a goose twice in the parking lot of Crossgate Lanes, causing its death."

The attack happened on the evening of Sunday, April 17, and was reported to the police amost immediately.

The suspect was driving a old white 1994 Chevrolet Cavalier, which the police have located.  They also know who owns the car; we don't know if the police believe the car's owner was driving it at the time.

Police collected what they describe as "Canada geese hair and feathers" at the scene.

Killing Canada geese except as part of legal hunting or under other limited circumstances is illegal under state and federal law.  Deliberately killing an animal in this manner likely violates animal cruelty laws as we

Guess who stopped in for dinner?

LOVELAND (FOX19) - If mice are on the menu, you may find a red-tailed hawk on the guest list.

Mike Fugate of Loveland saw this hawk in his back yard Monday morning.  The birds are fairly common in Ohio, and are seen all over the Tri-State.  They can be found flying around downtown and industrial areas at times.

Studies of red-tails show outdoor species of mice as a huge percentage of their diet.  They also eat other small mammals, small birds, lizards, snakes, and sometimes poultry.

They are one of the largest hawk species in this area.  Each wing is longer than the body, giving the bird a large wingspan for soaring.  If you were able to look at the opposite side of the bird, you would see the solid red tail that gives it its name.
